Insulation
The first thing you’ll want to do when preparing your RV for your upcoming trip is insulating it. This will help keep heat from escaping and cold from slipping in, making it easier to keep your RV at a comfortable temperature. Start by adding film or even heavy drapes to windows to keep the cold out. You’ll also want to check your RVs nooks and crannies for holes or cracks that need to be sealed up. For example, the bottom of your door may not be airtight, and you’ll want to add a bit of weather stripping to keep the heat in.
Engine
The cold can be hard on engines, and we advise giving them a quick tune-up before hitting the road. Be sure to check the oil to see if you need to top it off or get it changed. You’ll also need to make sure that the coolant and antifreeze are still adequately filled. If you plan on driving through areas with heavy snowfall, you may want to invest in a pair of snow tires or chains. Either way, be sure that they have plenty of air pressure before you drive off, as cold temperatures tend to result in flats.
Interior
Even if your RV has a heating system, it’s still a good idea to invest in a space heater. Not only will this keep your space warmer, but it may also keep your pipes from freezing in the extreme cold. If you’re feeling extra cautious, you can also purchase heating strips to place around your pipes, and insulate your waste valve when temperatures drop below zero.
