The Redwood Forest
This will come as no surprise to our fellow Californians, but we have to feature the spectacular Redwood National and State Parks front and center. Fresno residents who get sick of the swelter flock to the Redwoods each summer, and for good reason! In this temperate paradise, you can expect average highs in the 70s and 80s from June through August.
Of course, the Redwoods have much more to offer than just cool temperatures! This area is home to the largest trees on earth, along with an abundance of scenic roads, hiking trails, and small secluded beaches to explore. There are plenty of RV parks in the Redwood region, just make sure to book your campsite well in advance.
The Columbia River Gorge
Located on the border between Oregon and Washington, the Columbia River Gorge is another great place to escape the heat. This lush rainforest is packed with sparkling waterfalls and picturesque river views, all within easy reach of the urban amenities in Portland. Hiking and windsurfing are the main attractions here, and the brisk Columbia River is also good for a refreshing swim on hot afternoons. That being said, the temperatures here don’t often climb above 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
For RV camping near the Columbia River Gorge, we highly recommend the Sandy Riverfront RV Resort in Troutdale, OR. This full-featured RV park also provides direct access to the nearby Sandy River, a popular destination for tubing.
Glacier National Park
If you are looking to chase even cooler temperatures, you can head to Glacier National Park in northern Montana. Temperatures here seldom exceed 60 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the height of summer! This mountain playground spans over a million acres of wilderness, and provides a welcome refuge from civilization to wildlife and nature lovers alike.
The campgrounds within Glacier National Park do not feature RV hookups, but that poses no obstacle for the dedicated boondocker. If you prefer a campsite with amenities, you can head to one of the many resorts just outside the park that cater to the RV crowd. We recommend the Moose Creek RV Resort, located 2.5 miles from the park entrance.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
If you don’t already associate Michigan with natural beauty, you should think again. The remote Upper Peninsula is a wooded wonderland that offers crystal clear water, sandy beaches, and majestic waterfalls. Summer highs on the Peninsula seldom break 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity is mild by Michigan standards.
Our favorite camping spot on the Upper Peninsula is Straits State Park. From there, you can take the ferry to Mackinac Island for an exciting day trip. Indian Lake State Park is another great option, with lakefront campsites and convenient access to Big Spring (aka Kitch-iti-kipi). No matter where you camp on the Upper Peninsula, this natural spring is a must-see attraction.
We hope this guide has inspired you to get out there and explore! Does your RV need a quick tune-up before your next adventure? You can count on the service department at Freedom RV Fresno for all your RV repair needs. We welcome our neighbors from Visalia and Merced, CA!
