Buying a Cover for Your RV

Whether you’ve always loved camping or just needed the option to bring some home-style comforts with you, an RV is the perfect way to elevate your camping trip into a camping experience. But when you’re not using your RV, it’s important to cover it to protect it from the elements and prying eyes.

We here at Freedom RV Fresno want to help you get the perfect cover for your needs, so we’ve put together some tips on buying the right RV cover, below. To learn more, or to see the RVs and RV accessories we have for sale, contact our store in Fresno, California, today!

Types of Cover

While you could just throw a tarp over it and call it a day, these makeshift covers are definitely not your best possible option. Aside from a tarp not being form-fitting to the point where it will inevitably fail to cover parts of the RV, it’s also more vulnerable to the elements than other cover types.

Shrink wrapping is another option which will certainly meet the “form-fitting” qualifier, but it can trap existing moisture inside or on your RV just as well as it keeps more moisture out, which can cause corrosion, mold, and mildew. Plus, it’s just plain wasteful—you can’t reuse the same shrink-wrapping twice.

Ideally you’ll get a semi-custom or custom RV cover that’s designed for your make and model specifically.

Narrow it Down

Obviously you’ll want to start by looking at covers designed for your type of RV. Whether you have a motorhome of whatever class, a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or pop-up camper, there are RV covers designed for the specific shapes and dimensions you need.

Semi-Custom Covers

A semi-custom cover is less specialized than it sounds. These are covers that can cover a range of sizes in a particular RV category—for example, large motorhomes between 30’ and 33’. If your RV measures on the high end of that range, you may want to go a size up.

Custom Covers

A custom cover is just about what it sounds like. These are covers that were designed to cover a specific make and model of an RV, but they can go a step further still. Since many RVs have optional upgrades and add-ons that might change the silhouette or length slightly, a custom cover can match your specific version of the RV to ensure a perfect fit. Make sure to measure all the applicable dimensions yourself—don’t rely on generalized specs for your make and model, since your version might differ slightly.
